چکیده

Observations of mesospheric OH rotational temperature by the Mesospheric Temperature Mapper located at Cerro Pachon, Chile (30.3°S, 70.7°S) show a large range of variation. Temperature variances reveal increased activity due to mountain waves. Comparative studies with the satellite carried SABER instrument show agreement on nightly, as well as seasonal, temperature measurements. Comparisons with similar temperature measurements from Maui, Hawaii (20.8°N) reveal mountain wave activity to be enhanced over the Andes in the winter months. Initial gravity wave measurements from McMurdo Base, Antarctica are

Characteristics of Mesospheric Gravity Waves Near the Magnetic Equator, Brazil, During the SpreadFEx Campaign

As part of the SpreadFEx campaign, coordinated optical and radio measurements were made from Brazil to investigate the occurrence and properties of equatorial Spread F, and to characterize the regional mesospheric gravity wave field. All-sky image measurements were made from two sites: Brasilia and Cariri located ∼10 S of the magnetic equator and separated by ∼1500 km. In particular, the observ...

On the seasonal onset of polar mesospheric clouds and the breakdown of the stratospheric polar vortex in the Southern Hemisphere

[1] Southern Hemisphere (SH) polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs), also known as noctilucent clouds, have been observed to be more variable and, in general, dimmer than their Northern Hemisphere (NH) counterparts. The precise cause of these hemispheric differences is not well understood. This paper focuses on one aspect of the hemispheric differences: the timing of the PMC season onset. Observations...

Observations of the mesospheric semi-annual oscillation (MSAO) in water vapour by Odin/SMR

Mesospheric water vapour measurements taken by the SMR instrument onboard the Odin satellite between 2002 and 2006 have been analysed with focus on the meso-spheric semi-annual circulation in the tropical and subtropical region. This analysis provides the first complete picture of mesospheric SAO in water vapour, covering alti-5 tudes above 80 km where the only previous study based on UARS/HALO...

Zonal wave numbers of the summertime 2 day planetary wave observed in the mesosphere by EOS Aura Microwave Limb Sounder

[1] Recent observations and theoretical work suggest that the 2 day planetary wave in the summertime mesosphere is composed of multiple superposed zonal wave numbers. Here we use EOS Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) temperature data to determine the component zonal wave numbers of the 2 day wave in the mesosphere at latitudes of 70°S to 70°N from 2004 to 2009. We consider the effect of aliasin...

Gravity Waves and Ionospheric Irregularities over Tropical Convection Zones observed by GPS/MET Radio Occultation

GPS/MET observations of the tropical atmosphere of the southern hemisphere (5S to 25S) during February 1997 are analysed, when a high amount of convective tropospheric water vapor is at these latitudes. Enhanced gravity wave activity of the lower stratosphere at h=22-28 km is associated to areas of increased tropospheric water vapor pressure at h=4-6 km, regarded as a measure of tropical convec...
